Wonderful where I end up everywhere: in the hospital, in a cathedral, in an office, in a co-working space. The visualizing work clarifies and brings color.
Scribing illustrating books
Open-Heart-Circles', a book that just came out that I contributed to as a scribe. The book was written by Lut Wouters, Willy Vandamme, Eef Goedseels and Lieve Windels. I sat with them and while we were talking about the book that was coming up, I was present in the drawing. Some of those drawings can be found in this beautiful booklet.
The book helps to find a language to speak about psychological vulnerability. Clear and substantiated, it shows you how to treat people in crisis with love. The power of Open Heart Circles lies in its apparent simplicity: the focus on connection between people. Connection through dialogue and communication, through honest conversations, conversations from the heart.
This book is for sale via vzw Re-Member. Check out their website and support their operation, which is currently under pressure because subsidies have been lost. You can support the non-profit organization by purchasing the booklet en masse through this onelink.
Are you writing a book yourself and do you want to come up with an image on the cover and drawings that illustrate the inside of your book in an authentic way, then you can call on me. As a scribe I visualize the essence. The drawings can also be used in the marketing and launch of your book.
Scribing as installation in a cathedral
Pleasant collaboration with Annemarie Peeters, author of the book Vanishing Time. A story about burnout and the right to be allowed to stop. Together with a number of musicians, a performance was made that was shown in the Sint-Rombouts Cathedral in Mechelen, on the occasion of the Lunalia festival. That was a fantastic experience, scribing in a cathedral!
My studio in Leuven
My studio is housed in Keizersberg Abbey. Here I withdraw, here I find peace. Nature is also a place of inspiration for me. My own artistic work is about circles. Occasionally there is an open studio moment. My art is for sale. You can always make an appointment to come and snoop in my drawers. I also sell art cards. And there is a website where I tell about my work: www.bioart.eu. On instagram there are regular impressions via @bioartprint.
Remembering: portraying loss stories
Nice project in collaboration with Connection in Loss and Dela Uitvaartzorg. A fogged-up therapist talks to a grieving woman. I sit there and tell the story. I am present and after the conversation I show and tell what I captured. These sessions were filmed and a video is being made. In this way, Dela wants to contribute to the mourning revolution. These kinds of initiatives create space for mourning, also at work. For example, I once made a visual mourning report of a care team that wanted to make a warm gesture to the relatives of a deceased patient.
Search and find together
Looking ahead in time. Going out with a group. Bringing all voices together and feeling where the group wants to go. Bringing structure. How are we going to organize ourselves? Project for Leuven Restorative City in collaboration with Monika Meysmans from Kamino. Monika is a lawyer and specializes in sustainable contracting and visual contracts. Grafting collaborations into common values. Great to be able to make that visible.
Visualizing all voices: for individuals and groups
Super nice collaboration with Hade and Wiske van Levuur. A participation day for Woonzorgnet Dijleland. In Hall 5 in Leuven, we thought about residential care centers of the future, wonderful ideas, vibrant dynamics. I made it visual through an illustrated program booklet and live scribing on the day itself. A year later, the drawings are still being used, in presentations and brainstorming sessions.
Drawings that clarify an approach
In the day hospital of UPC KU Leuven they work with Haim Omer's method of non-violent resistance. Living group management organizes parent groups in which they explain, explain and practice the working method. They asked me to make a series of drawings to illustrate the theory well and aptly. They use the drawings in their powerpoint, turn them into postcards and recently they were allowed to speak at the Mental Health Congress, where they also integrated the drawings into their presentation. So multiple use!
Brightening up a book, so that the content lands even better
Here you see Marijke Leys. She is the author of the book 'Vulnerability as a compass'. She told me about her book and I was there to sign. Drawings that arise in a live context are the drawings that want to arise, the drawings that are necessary to convey the content. That's why all my illustration work is done 'live'. In real time, in the encounter, that's where it happens. Connecting, moving, instructive. For all parties.
Intervisions for teams
Scribing is nice during intervision moments. This day was created around self-care in collaboration with Franky De Cooman. I myself was present as an outsider witness. Unbiased drawing what is. At the end of the day, the participants took the drawings home as a sort of visual compass.
Ideas of young people, requested by UNICEF
How do young people view the role of schools in mental health care? I listened to a group of 8 young people who stayed for a longer period of time in a semi-residential facility and wrote down their thoughts and ideas. The drawings were published in UNICEF's annual report. Talk about impact. A visual speaks volumes. You can see what it's all about at a glance. And the ideas were fresh, to the point and rich.
Visuals that anchor the learning process
Together with Marijke D'Herde from Akiiki vzw I supervised a young team from Minor Ndako that takes care of a group of minor refugees. Working with and for that target group is tough and requires a high level of awareness. Marijke gave them training in connecting communication and I drew their process, their intentions, their desires. Afterwards they said that they hung the drawings in their team room. The visuals ensure that what they learned remained visible and that they could remember the team day for a long time.
Life story work
It is wonderful to be able to bundle the difficult and beautiful trajectories that young people walk in the context of admission to a day hospital. I read all the reports, put them in a nice layout and then I bind everything together with the young person in question. Bookbinding. At the final interview of the young person, his or her parents and the care team, I am present in the drawing and I visualize all voices, colors and sounds. Then I retreat to my studio and give an artistic response to what I read and heard. I do that in a leporello, which is a harmonica book. Each leporello looks different and resonates with the younger one. The recognition is therefore great. Just like the excitement. Fantastic work and especially great to be able to do that in the context of a university hospital. Top job.
Job coaching: follow the voice of your heart
People's careers are no longer straight lines but follow a meandering path. I guided many people in their search for a more meaningful use of their working time. Some people decide to start as an independent entrepreneur, others look for a job that suits them better, within or outside the organization in which they work. It's great to see people flourish when they're in the right chair.
